My earliest memories of Shirley were when she, Cynthia, Tom and Susan moved in with us on East Street. Wally was out to sea with the Coast Guard (why did we call him Wimpy?)
At that time all I saw was that I had 2 mothers and they were sisters. You know what that meant....... They had the same mothering techniques . I can't even imagine how that was for Shirley whose children went abruptly from 3 to 8. Shirley was no pushover either. Remember lining up to see who lied and had the infamous black line on their tongue?
It was wonderful too, besides having two mothers to love us we got to meet her and get to know her. AND, I now had a playmate and best friend, Cynthia.
Taking trips to Cape May New Jersey with our family was a lot of fun too. ROAD TRIP. Especially the "Tick" line up after being out in the long grass or picking berries.
But, my most important memories were when Shirley took me in and helped me with Julie's pregnancy. I don't know how Mom and Dad set it up with her , but it was a God-send for me.
Because I didn't know I should transfer my nursing license to Florida, I didn't work. It didn't occur to me to work in the grocery store or convenient mart, so I lived there for free. Shirley never said anything . I was never made to feel, a burden or ashamed. The little I could do was cooking, cleaning, and babysitting for Marjorie (my substitute for Charlie) . This was all so trivial to what she gave to me. We played a lot of scrabble (of course) , she tried hard to find me a doctor for my flaring newly diagnosed Asthma, and held me when I cried . We talked and she listened to me and helped me with transportation, shelter and Love.
She was my Aunt , my Mother , my counselor and my Friend. I love you Shirley.

I loved just chit chatting with Gram about football, television, and our day to day lives. Whenever I needed advice she always seemed to know when a supportive word or a real kick-in-the-tail was necessary.
Thank you Gram for being here as long as you were. Love you. |

Shirley, you told me many times that when I married Susan, that the mother-in-law was part of the package, and boy were you right!
Thanks for the infamous "control" recliner and TV...I'll pick up where you left off. Keep the tomatoes growing up there, and I'll keep them growing here. I love you, and I will miss you. Love,"Roe" |

| I cannot think of St. Lukes (AKA Mayo) unless I think of Shirley, her voice over the intercom, her laughter going down the hall. Her faithfulness to work even when she did not feel well. She surely left a legacy to all who loved and knew her. Our peace and joy comes from knowing someday we will meet again. I know there probably won't be any slot machines in Heaven but perhaps Bingo!! To Ronald and Susan my brother and sister-in-law; there is a special place in Heaven for you for taking care of your Mother in her final years and I know you have earned a crown. God Bless and Lots of Love....Sister |

| I worked with Shirley at St. Lukes for many years and she was a wonderful person. I enjoyed her kindness, humor and generousity. She was someone I always asked about and thought of when thinking of special times at St Luke's. Shirley is someone I will always remember and smile when I think of her. |
